Anglesey Against Wind Turbines campaigner vows to fight on following ‘intimidation’

Credit:  by Rhodri Barker, Bangor and Anglesey Mail, www.theonlinemail.co.uk 28 September 2011 ~~

A campaigner against wind turbines says she will not be stopped by “intimidation” following the destruction of placards erected in her garden.

Goretti Chilton and her neighbours in Penmynydd woke last week to find that signs protesting against building turbines in the area had been taken from their gardens.

“We woke up on Friday and both our signs were gone from the garden,” said Mrs Chilton.

“Our neighbours’ signs were gone too, and we found bits and pieces of some of the signs smashed up in the road.”

Mrs Chilton, a member of the recently formed Anglesey Against Wind Turbines, said a total of five signs were taken from her house and the surrounding houses.

“My neighbour who had screwed her signs to the wall of her house still had hers, but she said she’d heard them being tampered with during the night, which scared her a bit.

“Another of my neighbours has just had a baby and was up at 2.30am feeding him when she heard noises outside.

“She put it down to the usual sounds you get in the countryside, but then found her sign had been taken and now feels quite frightened by it.”

Mrs Chilton, 42, said the premises had been deliberately targeted for their opposition to wind turbines.

“We’re entitled to our opinion and they’re trying to intimidate us – that’s how it feels.

“I thought free speech was allowed in this country.

“It seems childish and cowardly to me, although it’s frightening to think someone had the audacity to come into our garden and take them.

“On Thursday night, just before it happened, we’d been going door-to-door canvassing our neighbours.

“Not everybody agreed with our position, but we’re all entitled to our opinions.”

Mother-of-three Mrs Chilton said she would replace the placards and vowed to continue her campaigning.

“We’re going to put our signs in a cement bucket from now on, so that they can’t be taken away.

“This hasn’t put me off at all; if anything, it’s made me more determined.

“I’m not going to be stopped and my neighbours aren’t either – we will carry on.”
