Lewis windfarm decision

We wish to send Energy Minister Jim Mather and the Scottish Government our truly heartfelt thanks for their momentous decision to refuse the Lewis windfarm application. Thanks are also due to the many thousands of people in Lewis who objected to this scheme, and to all of Lewis’s friends farther afield. The RSPB, Scottish Natural Heritage, John Muir Trust, Scottish Wildlife Trust, the Ramblers’ Association and the other agencies who stood up for the environment also deserve our thanks, as do MSP Alastair Allan and MP Angus MacNeil for speaking out against Amec’s proposal.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and HIE, who promoted Amec’s giant windfarm plan against the wishes of the people, now have to examine their own policies in the light of this decision. They should promote our internationally-important environment for the benefit of all and “talk up” the islands, instead of continually looking for outside large-scale intervention to “save” us.
The communities of rural Lewis, and the Gaelic language they keep alive, will prosper only when the people have a sense of confidence and self-belief.
Approving the Lewis windfarm would have driven morale to rock bottom. Now we have been given a huge boost and can move forward.
