No windfarm plans yet

Energy company Synergy Wind has denied rumours it was planning to build a windfarm in the rural district of Carrajung.

Speculation that the township had been targeted as a potential site for a windfarm gathered momentum after Synergy Wind staff were spotted conducting wind measurements in the area.

While the company confirmed it did have staff in the area taking wind measurements, it said this was common practice across all regions of Victoria and New South Wales.

Synergy Wind said residents in the area had nothing to fear.

Last week Carrajung resident Terry Vincent contacted The Express with concerns Synergy Wind had earmarked the district as a future site for a windfarm.

Mr Vincent said a public meeting was held about windfarms so residents would be in a better position to deal with Synergy Wind with an open mind when and if they were approached with an official proposal.

He said while the energy company was witnessed conducting measurements in the area, they had failed to inform the community of their motives.

But Synergy Wind explained to The Express residents would not be approached until they had conclusive results from their measurements.

Synergy Wind spokesperson Christian Spitzner revealed the residents of Carrajung had nothing to fear by the company’s presence in the area.

“We are investigating wind speeds and we are only in the early stages of testing and it will be a few months before we get an idea about the wind speeds and directions,” Mr Spitzner said.

He said taking measurements was a routine procedure and it would be “three to six months” before any decision was made to “go ahead with a proposal or not”.

“We are measuring all over Victoria and New South Wales, so you can imagine if we were to tell people everywhere what we were doing there would be many rumours about windfarms in the community,” Mr Spitzner said.

“We don’t plan to disturb the community until we have the final figures from our testing.”

He did reveal a farmer in the area was told of the measurements, but this was the only contact with the community at this point in time.

The Express reported last week that Carrajung locals believed as many as 40 wind turbines could be erected in the area.

At this stage Wellington Shire is yet to receive a permit application from the company regarding a possible Carrajung windfarm project.

Earlier this year Synergy Wind won a long battle to build wind turbines at Devon North.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal rejected residents’ and landholders’ objections and set aside Wellington Shire Council’s decision to refuse a permit for the windfarm.
