Appeal heard; ZBA holds hearing on wind farm special land use permit appeal

The Mason County Zoning Board of Appeals learned more Thursday about an appeal submitted by a group of citizens who believe the planning commission erred in granting approval of Consumers Energy’s special land use application for their proposed wind farm in Riverton and Summit townships.
A public hearing on the matter was held Thursday at West Shore Community College. Representatives from both Citizens Alliance for Responsible Renewable Energy and Consumers Energy as well as members of the public were given an opportunity to address the ZBA.
Seventeen people offered their opinion on the appeal, with 15 stating the planning commission erred in some way in their process of approving a special lands use request from Consumers Energy to construct a wind farm with 56 476-foot-tall wind turbines in Riverton and Summit townships. Two people, in addition to Consumers Energy’s attorney, spoke out against CARRE’s appeal.
