Wind farm has some residents upset

RAYMONDVILLE – A new power source for the Valley will soon be built in Willacy County.
A wind farm owned by Duke Energy will cover 30,000 acres of farmland.
The wind farm will be about 20 miles from the Gulf Coast along Farm to Market road 1018 and 507.
The company hopes those turbines will power more than 50,000 homes.
One woman who lives in the area isn’t happy about the news.
“I just enjoy being in the country and I don’t really like seeing all the turbines,” says Janis Richardson.
Duke Energy Spokesman Robert Pena says the obstructed view is a small price to pay.
“I think you’re still going to look across the horizon and see some fine farmland that will continue to be farmed,” he says.
Richardson says it’s not just about the view, she’s also concerned about migratory birds.
“I would just like to see more studies done before they start building, and I don’t think those have been done,” she says.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to Physicist Robert Benson. He says he’s studied the environmental impact of the turbines in nearby Kenedy County.
He says the study showed a smaller impact on migrating birds. He says some energy companies will shut the turbines down when a lot of birds are in the area.
