Nelson officials approve wind energy restrictions revisions

The Nelson County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution earlier this month that changed the restrictions on small wind energy systems within Nelson County.
Small wind energy systems are freestanding or building-mounted towers that contain a system that converts wind into electricity to be used on-site.
In 2009, supervisors passed an amendment to the Nelson County’s zoning ordinance allowing small wind energy systems to be constructed within the county.
When the ordinance was passed, t he maximum height restriction is 45 feet on a parcel of one or two acres, 60 feet on a parcel that is two to five acres and 100 feet on parcels five acres or larger.
The new amendments passed by the supervisors on July 12 allow for small wind energy systems between 100 feet and 199 feet tall on parcels of land 20 acres or more in size in agricultural, conservation and industrial districts within the county.
The amendments also included changing the number of small wind energy systems allowed on a single tract of land.
Two or more small wind energy systems that meet the requirements will be allowed by special use permits in conservation, agricultural and industrial districts within the county.
