Wyoming County Divided on Turbines

Wyoming County seems to be split on the proposal to bring alternative energy to its backyard.

About 200 residents attended a public meeting on a plan to build wind turbines. The plan calls for placing more than 60 turbines throughout three communities in Wyoming County.

“We need big business to come into upstate New York,” said Spencer Steed of Warsaw. “There has been no big business coming in here in the last twenty years or so. We need the income, Perry needs the income, the school systems needs the income. It’s a good influx of money.”

“These sized turbines were originally designed for Texas, California, the Great Plains,” said Mary Kay Barton of Perry. “They weren’t designed, these big ones, weren’t designed to be so close to people. The smaller ones are fine. We have some in the area and people use them to power their homes and their apartments.”

The Perry Town Board plans to make a decision on the proposal next month.
