Wind turbine on fire in Aberdeenshire as black smoke fills sky near St Cyrus

A wind turbine is on fire in a field in Aberdeenshire – with shocking footage caught by a passing bus driver showing the blazing machinery.

A five second clip caught by Stagecoach driver Scott Galloway shows black smoke flooding into the sky from the burning turbine while yellow flames coming from below the blades just north of St Cyrus.

Scott told Aberdeen Live that he had caught sight of the blaze when passing the area in his bus at around 2.20pm today.

It is unclear at this time what has caused the blaze and whether the turbine is still on fire.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: ” We were alerted at 2.14pm on Wednesday, 23 November to reports of a fire affecting a wind turbine near Mains of Lauriston, Aberdeenshire.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene, where crews remain onsite and are liaising with onsite personnel to make the area safe.

“No firefighting was required.”

Similar fires have happened in turbines in other parts of the country.

In July there were similar scenes in Ayrshire after a wind turbine fire near West Kilbride.
