A wind turbine has caught fire this morning sending smoke billowing across a large area of Hull.

A significant plume of smoke could be seen rising from the distinctive turbine at the former Croda International plc site this morning shortly after 7am. The site was bought by Cargill plc on June 30. An area of grassland near to the turbine also appears to have caught fire.

The turbine sited on the Cargill factory site between Oak Road Playing Fields and Clough Road was still continuing to rotate as the fire spread. Humberside Fire & Rescue Service have confirmed they have received “multiple calls” about the incident and a crew is already in attendance.

Video taken early this morning shows fiery debris falling from the blazing turbine onto the area surrounding it. The plume of smoke coming from the turbine fire can be seen for miles around. The 125m turbine is the oldest in the city of Hull having been granted planning approval in May 2007. It was erected in a year later in 2008.
