NYPA rejects public renewables proposal

The New York Power Authority doesn’t want to build new renewables despite a push by some Democratic lawmakers and public power advocates. NYPA interim president and CEO Justin Driscoll told assemblymembers during a lengthy hearing Thursday that the authority did not support the Build Public Renewables Act. The bill would allow NYPA to build and own new renewables and require it to largely shut fossil fuel plants by 2030. It’s a flagship measure for the Democratic Socialists of America and the cornerstone of an organizing campaign that ultimately seeks to make all utilities publicly owned.
