Campaigners say wind farms are destroying rural life and tourism after the Scottish government pledged to build more turbines.

SNP ministers want 50 per cent of Scotland’s electricity, heat and transport to come from renewable energy by 2030.

Wind power supplied nearly all of Scotland’s electricity in 2020 but the phasing out of gas boilers and uptake of electric vehicles will push demand even higher, according to research accompanying a government consultation report published yesterday.

The consultation received 160 responses, with 111 from organisations and 49 from individuals.

Opinions were split on whether the SNP’s plans were actually achievable, with slightly more respondents sceptical about the government’s assessment of Scotland’s renewable potential than favourable. The consultation report stated: “Concerns were voiced that there needs
