Your editorial of January 25 about the threat posed by wind turbines to the landscape on and around Exmoor is timely.
The Gadarene rush to build and profit from these intrusive machines has been gathering speed since the first “wind farm” was established at Delabole, North Cornwall.
There are two of these industrial sites with a combined total of 31 turbines within a radius of four miles from Davidstow, on the edge of Bodmin Moor; if recent proposals for Otterham, Tich Barrow and near Davidstow succeed there will be 59 – yes, 59 – within that radius.
Many would be 400 feet tall and would thus be level with the top of Roughtor, the second highest point on the moor. They would ruin the splendid views to and from a large area of the moor, an adjacent Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the surrounding countryside, and the formation of this “wind turbine alley” would be a serious threat to the tourist trade on which the local economy depends so greatly.
The harm they would do to the landscape and lives of residents would totally outweigh any supposed benefit from the minute and unreliable amount of power they might produce.
Our group has been opposing the proliferation of these machines for many years and we hope you will support us in our belief that no more should be built here.
