Silent protest at wind farm information event today

A silent protest opposing the development of a major wind farm in the Gweebarra area of West Donegal is taking place this afternoon.

Ørsted and FuturEnergy Ireland are jointly exploring the potential for a wind energy project near the Clogherachullion and Cloghercor areas of the Gweebarra eastuary They are proposing 21 turbines in an area that includes the Wild Atlantic Way.

The Gweebarra Conservation Group is holding a pop-up silent protest between 12 midday and 8pm at St Bridget’s Hall, Lettermacaward to show their opposition to Ørsted, ESB, and Coillte’s plans to develop this area for industrial wind turbines.

“Five thousand, two hundred and sixty-six people have already signed our petition opposing industrial wind turbines on our Natura2000 Gweebarra River SAC and no one we canvased locally in recent weeks was in favour of industrialising our small farming community,” said a spokesperson this morning.

According to the Cloghercor Wind Farm website their community engagement started in 2021, and the first design iteration for the project has been on display in an online exhibition since July 2021 on their website.

It adds: “We have been carefully considering feedback from the community and evaluating the findings from ongoing environmental site studies, and are now able to share an updated proposal for Cloghercor Wind Farm with the community.

“The Cloghercor Wind Farm project team are eager to engage closely and constructively with the local community. Please get in touch to speak with our team, and submit your questions and feedback.

“You can now book an appointment to view our new proposed design and layout and meet our local project team at our upcoming community sessions:

Monday: June 13, 12pm – 8pm, Halla Naomh Bride, Madavagh, Lettermacaward

Tuesday: June 14, 12pm – 8pm, Teach Gleann Ceo, Main Street, Doochary

To book an appointment, you can get in touch with their team at either:
info@cloghercorwindfarm.com or (021) 422 3677.”

Their virtual exhibition is available to view on the website from today Monday.
