A letter for the Crawford County Commissioners

Credit:  Crawford County Now | April 26, 2022 | crawfordcountynow.com ~~

A letter for Crawford County Commissioners, Ley, Weisenauer, and Schmidt,

First, I would like to say thank you for holding a public forum to listen to the people of the county and get their opinion on if Crawford County is the right fit for industrial wind turbines.

At the meeting, we heard a lot of opinions and facts from the opposition, but I can’t say the same about Apex. The Representative from Apex stood at the front of the room and essentially tried to push his narrative of fear and division onto you and the people of the county. He stood there and told the people that you serve, that they don’t know what is right for the county and communities that they live in, but Apex does. He stood there and claimed that the anti-wind group uses fearmongering to push their agenda on others, yet in the same sentence threatens that this is the only way to financial stability for the county. He talked about Paulding County (18,871) that has less than half of Crawford County’s (41,754) population and how the Timber Road wind farm was successful and that the residents of that county are happy and grateful for the wind turbines. But we have heard first-hand accounts from people in that county, warning us to not make the same mistakes that they did in letting a company like Apex ravage the county. He never once gave facts or actual data refuting the ones given by the opposition, yet he stood there and said the opposition had no accurate data to support the claims they made. I watched as Mr. Fehrman stood along the wall and made faces and laughed as people got up and spoke their opinions and spoke facts about why these industrial turbines are not for Crawford County. Is this really the type of company Crawford County should be doing business with?

To the people of the county, my friends and family. Ask yourselves this: would you be for this project if money wasn’t involved? I moved to Morrow County in 2018 but I still farm with my father and grandfather in Crawford County. My wife and I want to move back and grow our family in Crawford County, but neither of us feels that would be an option if these turbines are built. There are several non-biased, statistically relevant, peer reviewed studies on the negative effects of living in close proximity to industrial wind turbines, which are a result of stress caused by shadow flicker and “swooshing” and “swishing” noises. I encourage you to do your own research into this matter; it is not hard to find accurate information on design flaws, inefficiency, and long term consequences of building these turbines. Like I said, if money wasn’t a factor would this even be a discussion? The majority of the money that Apex is paying is our money coming from the government in the form of subsidies from our taxes. We are essentially paying ourselves. I’ve heard before that “farmers need this money to survive” but I can tell you that we will be fine. Farmers have always and will always survive. We pride ourselves on a strong work ethic and integrity and we will be fine without industrial turbines. Our community is strong but our friendships are stronger and I truly believe that our county will be better off in the future without industrial turbines driving a wedge in between friends and family.

Commissioners, two of you have known me since I was a little boy. Mr.Weisenauer lives a little more than two miles from where I grew up and Mr.Ley came into my school to teach D.A.R.E. As elected officials you are charged with conditioning the county for the future. I am asking you to do your duty to the county and restrict the county from Apex and other companies like it. The truth of the matter is that the decision you make will not only affect you it will affect me and my children and many other families like mine, do you really want your time in office to be remembered as detrimental to the well-being of the families in our community?

Thank you,

Paul Hartschuh
