Roads damaged while building a wind farm in Codington County will cost at least $8.1 million to repair, according to bids opened by county commissioners during their Tuesday meeting.
NextEra, which oversaw the wind energy project, will cover the cost.
Commissioners opened and reviewed three bids for the work:
- Duininck Inc.of Prinsburg, Minn.: $8.1 million, the low bid.
- Bituminous Paving of Ortonville, Minn.: $8.9 million.
- Border States of Fargo, N.D.: $11.4 million.
No action was taken, but commissioners will revisit the topic soon to award the bid.
The county expected the work to improve 60-odd miles of roads could cost near $11.5 million. That’s a total that was discussed at previous commission meetings.
The roads were damaged when NextEra built the Crowned Ridge 1 and 2 wind energy projects in the eastern third of Codington County. That’s why the Florida-based company is agreeable to paying for the damage.
The project will include nearly 85,000 tons of asphalt concrete composite as the roads are improved.
