Plans for large windmill park at sea

Norwegian energy producer Lyse has presented plans for a large wind power plant to be built in the North Sea. The 200 windmills will supply electricity for 220,000 households.

The planned windmill park will cover an area of around 200 square kilometres in the North Sea, 130 kilometres south west of Lista.

The windmills will be built on seabed foundations, at a depth of between 45 and 60 metres. Height above sea level will be 90 metres.

The wind farm will produce 4.5 TWh, enough to supply the electricity needs of 220,000 households.

According to early estimates, the wind power plant will cost at least NOK 20 billion, says Lyse project manager Stig Svalheim.

He says the project could be completed by 2017.

The Norwegian Nature Conservation Society (Naturvernforbundet) appaluds the plan, while local fishermen are against, claiming it will hamper fisheries and be a hazard to shipping.
